What is GDPR?
Applicable as from 25 May 2018, the new General Data Protection Regulation is an update of the existing one introduced in 1995. Six major points are now compulsory to guarantee the protection of clients’ and/or internet users’ data.
The new regulation and the changes involved
If until now data was more or less protected on the internet, today everything is better structured and companies must provide evidence of their compliance. Among others, six items have been added in order to guarantee the security and privacy of internet users:
- Appoint a data protection office (contact person for Computer Technology and Freedoms, representative for data protection, etc.)
- Map data processing in a register
- Identify the actions to be taken to achieve compliance
- Manage potential risks by conducting privacy impact assessments
- Implement internal procedures to ensure high standards of protection
- Provide evidence of the steps taken towards achieving compliance by supplying documents and proven information

Romain, the manager of the e-commerce website Smoking.fr answers our questions about GDPR, the problems he faced in implementing it, what it changed for him and how he had it translated.
Dixit: Hello Romain, as an e-merchant, what has the GDPR changed for you?
Romain: We already had practices similar to the GDPR rules, so we didn’t need to change much. Still, we had to modify our Terms of Use and our Charter on data protection so that they legally comply with the new legislation.
Dixit: What kind of measures did you have to implement for your clients and employees and what difficulties did you encounter?
Romain: The measures were already in place but we had to put them into written form in order to comply with the new law. For example, we modified our in-house IT charter. Our aim was to make our employees more aware of good practices in IT security. Nothing has changed for our clients; we were already processing our newsletter subscribers’ data in a transparent and reactive way, meaning we were already up to date with the GDPR recommendations. Of course, the legal documents are complex and their interpretation often depends on the reader, which didn’t make things any easier when we wanted to have a global vision of our needs in view of implementation.
Dixit: You chose to have this text translated by the translation platform Dixit.com. Why?
Romain: We needed to have our Charter, which remains a legal and technical document, translated into English.
